Our passion is to educate the community about adult hearing loss.
Unfortunately 1 in 6 Australians suffer from some degree of hearing loss and only one in four who could benefit from a hearing aid currently uses one. On average it takes people 7 to 10 years to actively seek help for a hearing problem (1).
Hearing loss is a common problem caused by noise, ageing, disease and other factors. Hearing is a complex sense involving both the ear's ability to detect sounds and the brain's ability to interpret those sounds. Factors that determine how much a hearing loss will negatively affect a person include:

The degree of Hearing Loss depends on -
- The type and degree of the hearing loss;
- the pattern of hearing loss across different frequencies (pitches);
- whether one or both ears is affected;
- the areas of the auditory system that are not working normally (middle ear, inner ear, neural pathways, or brain);
- the recognition of speech sounds;
- their exposures to loud noise; and
- age (Presbycusis).
Age Related Hearing Loss
One form of hearing loss, presbycusis, comes on gradually as a person ages. Presbycusis commonly affects people over 50, many of whom are likely to lose some hearing each year. This may make it hard to hear what others are saying or to tolerate loud sounds.
Tinnitus, also common in older people, is a ringing, roaring, clicking, hissing, or buzzing sound. It can come and go, be heard in one or both ears, and be loud or soft. Tinnitus is a symptom, not a disease and can accompany any type of hearing loss. It can also be a side effect of certain medications. Something as simple as a piece of earwax blocking the ear canal can cause tinnitus, but it can also be the result of a number of health conditions.
There is no known cure for tinnitus but sound therapy, or use of any sound for the purposes of tinnitus management, is widely accepted as a management tool. This minimises the clients perception of tinnitus by reducing the loudness of the tinnitus with a less disruptive noise and reducing the attention drawn to the tinnitus. Impacts of Hearing Loss
Some people may not want to admit they have trouble hearing. Older people who cannot hear well may withdraw from others to avoid feeling frustrated or embarrassed about not understanding what is being said. Sometimes older people are mistakenly thought to be confused, unresponsive, or uncooperative just because they don't hear well. Hearing problems that are ignored or untreated can get worse.
